A program designed to provide students with the knowledge and the insight necessary to create fine specimen bonsai.

Hô Yoku (signifying "phoenix" in Japanese) is a three year basic course which has been sucessfully conducted in South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New York and Massachusetts. Following the tree year course many students choose to continue with the school in 'post graduate' groups. Such groups are currently active in North Carolina, New York and Massachusetts.

Experience is not necessary. In fact, as a teacher, I sometimes find that the more experience students have, the harder it is for them to accept that there are better ways of doing things. The most important requirements are passion and dedication.

There are four key aspects to the Hô Yoku philosophy:

Continuity
You study with one teacher for three years. You and the trees you work on develop in tandem, guided and monitored throughout.

Focus
Studying with the Hô Yoku School eliminates the misinformation and low standards that retard the progress of students learning through clubs and beginners' workshops. We aim high right from the start. The focus is on understanding the art, hortuculture and techniques of creating top quality bonsai - and nothing else.

Commitment
All bonsai enthusiasts have their own goals, but bonsai is not just a hobby you can pick up or put down according to your whim. The progress and quality of your work, and the well-being of your trees, depends entirely on your time and effort. As with learning to play the piano, or to ride a bicycle, practice is the key - practice, practice, practice!

Quality
Quality is more important than quantity. It is far better to have three or four top quality bonsai than fifty potted plants. The choice of raw material, the standard of design and workmanship, and the care you give to your trees will be of the highest level.
